Doljevac Improving Its Water Supply System with the Support of the EU

The expansion of the water supply system “Pusta reka”, launched in the Municipality of Doljevac with the support of the European Union (EU) through the EU PRO development programme, will provide access to safe drinking water to all residents of the Doljevac settlements of Malošište, Belotinac, Čapljinac and Klisura.

“Thanks to the EU, the implementation of this project will provide drinking water to around 5,000 people in four villages; moreover, we will connect our water supply system to that of Niš and we will be able to supply additional water to the City of Niš, if necessary,” said Doljevac Mayor Goran Ljubić. The Municipality plans on addressing all water supply problems and ensuring coverage of the entire municipality by a water supply network in the forthcoming period, he said.

“By supporting the implementation of a total of 37 local infrastructure projects, the European Union is helping advance the quality of life of the population through the improvement of the communal infrastructure, such as the Doljevac project, as well as through the improvement of the conditions in cultural and sports institutions,” said EU PRO Programme Manager Olivera Kostić.

Olivera Kostić stressed that the implementation of another major project was also under way in Doljevac, and that it involved the development of technical documentation for a business zone in Malošište, which would facilitate the improvement of the business environment, as well as the living standards of the local residents.

The works, worth 270,000 Euors, around 150,000 Euors of which are invested by the EU and around 120,000 Euros of which are invested by the Doljevac Municipality, entail the extension of the water supply system by an additional 2,460 meters and its connection to the Niš Water Supply System (NIVOS).

The activities focusing on the application of good governance principles, which are implemented in partnership with the Swiss PRO programme supported by the Swiss Government, include development and adoption of a Rulebook on the Conditions for and Method of Connection to the Water Supply System, which will be applied by the public water supply company.

The works are conducted by the Niš-based company MDS Inženjering, which was selected in a public procurement procedure implemented by the Doljevac Municipality, and are to be completed in 150 days.

The “Connection of the “Pusta reka” Water Supply System to the Niš Water Supply System (NIVOS)” project is funded by the European Union in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Serbia through the EU PRO programme. The complementary project activities involving the application of good governance principles are implemented in cooperation with the Swiss PRO programme supported by the Swiss Government.
